AVOIDING DECEPTION

You have learned how to test what you hear.
Now you must learn how to actively avoid deception.

DECEPTION DOES NOT LOOK WRONG.
IT LOOKS ALMOST RIGHT.

Deception is not always obvious. It does not usually present itself as something clearly evil. It comes incredibly close to truth, but it is not fully aligned with it. If you are not grounded, it will pull you off course without you even realizing it.

MATTHEW 24:4–5 (ESV)

“And Jesus answered them, ‘See that no one leads you astray. For many will come in my name…’”

This means deception is not rare. It is an active threat you must be aware of.

THE ONLY REFERENCE POINT

Avoiding deception begins with knowing truth. If you do not know what is true, you will never recognize what is false. You will naturally default to relying on how something sounds instead of what it actually is.

JOHN 17:17 (ESV)

“Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth.”

Scripture teaches that the Word of God is truth. That means it is your sole reference point. Everything must be measured against it.

Deception often works by mixing truth with error.

It may sound ninety percent right but be ten percent off. That slight shift is more than enough to completely change your direction over time. This is why you must pay absolute attention.

THE DANGER OF DRIFTING

2 PETER 3:17 (ESV)

“You therefore, beloved, knowing this beforehand, take care that you are not carried away with the error of lawless people and lose your own stability.”

Deception becomes exponentially easier when you drift. When you lower your guard, the enemy moves in.

[ X ] WHEN YOU ARE NOT CONSISTENT IN THE WORD.

[ X ] WHEN YOU ARE NOT STEADY IN YOUR WALK.

[ X ] WHEN YOUR FOCUS SHIFTS TO THE WORLD.

You immediately become more open to error. This is why staying grounded is essential. You do not drift into stability. You drift into destruction.

THE TRAP OF EMOTION

Deception appeals to what feels right to your flesh.

/// It sounds encouraging. ///
/// It feels powerful. ///
/// It seems perfectly logical. ///

But that does not make it true.

PROVERBS 14:12 (ESV)

“There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way to death.”

Do not rely on appearance.

You must rely on truth.

Avoiding deception means staying humble. You are not assuming you cannot be misled. You stay aware. You stay teachable. You stay fiercely guarded by the Word.

THE POSTURE OF A BELIEVER:

EPHESIANS 6:14 (ESV)

“Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth…”

[ X ] KNOW THE TRUTH.

[ X ] STAY GROUNDED IN THE WORD.

[ X ] DO NOT RELY ON FEELINGS.

[ X ] STAY AWARE AND HUMBLE.

[ X ] TEST EVERYTHING.

THIS IS HOW YOU AVOID DECEPTION.

YOU REMAIN STEADY.

Now that you understand how to navigate internal and theological deception, the next step is learning how to handle the external influence of the culture around you.
