LAW, GRACE, & THE KINGDOM

We are not saved by the Law, nor are we lawless.
We are blood-bought subjects of an invading Kingdom.

THE TWIN HERESIES.
LEGALISM & LAWLESSNESS.

The modern church is paralyzed by a severe misunderstanding of the relationship between Law and Grace. This theological illiteracy breeds two deadly extremes, both of which destroy the soul.

To the right is Legalism. To the left is Antinomianism.

Legalism is the arrogant belief that you can maintain or assist your salvation by obeying rules. It turns the cross into a down-payment, leaving you to finance the rest of your redemption through moral sweat. Antinomianism (lawlessness) is the perverse belief that because we are under grace, the moral commands of God no longer matter. It uses the blood of Christ as a license for rebellion.

ROMANS 6:1–2 (LSB)

“What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin so that grace may increase? May it never be! How shall we who died to sin still live in it?”

THE TRIPARTITE DIVISION

To navigate this, you must understand exactly what Jesus did to the Old Testament Law. He did not come with an eraser; He came with a signature.

MATTHEW 5:17 (LSB)

“Do not think that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I did not come to abolish but to fulfill.”

Theological scholars employ the Tripartite Division to categorize the 613 laws of the Mosaic Covenant. You must know which laws are fulfilled, and which are eternally binding.

1. THE CEREMONIAL LAW These were the dietary restrictions, the festivals, and the animal sacrifices. They were shadows. Jesus is the substance. When Christ shed His blood, the veil tore. The Ceremonial Law is entirely abolished in its practice because it was perfectly fulfilled in Christ.
2. THE CIVIL LAW These were the judicial laws governing the geopolitical theocracy of Israel (e.g., property rights, civil punishments). Because the New Testament Church is a spiritual nation scattered across the globe not a geopolitical state in the Middle East the Civil Law is no longer legally binding, though its underlying wisdom remains.
3. THE MORAL LAW Summarized in the Ten Commandments, this is the eternal, unchanging reflection of God’s holy character. It is binding on all people, in all eras. Murder, adultery, and idolatry were sins before Moses, during Moses, and after Christ. We do not obey the Moral Law to achieve salvation; we obey it because it is the blueprint of the new heart given to us in salvation.

THE ENGINE OF OBEDIENCE

This brings us to the doctrine of Sanctification. If we are saved entirely by grace, why pursue holiness?

Because grace is not just the pardon of sin; it is the power to assassinate it.

OBEDIENCE IS THE FRUIT, NOT THE ROOT.

The root of your salvation is the finished work of Jesus Christ. The inevitable fruit of a regenerated heart is a violent, lifelong war against sin and a deep desire to obey the King. If there is no obedience, there is no evidence of grace. A faith that does not produce works is a dead, demonic faith (James 2:19-20).

THE ALREADY AND THE NOT YET

How do we live this out? We live it within the tension of Kingdom Theology. When Jesus arrived, He declared, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand” (Mark 1:15). But look around. Sickness, death, and war still ravage the earth. Did the Kingdom fail?

Theology calls this Inaugurated Eschatology, often summarized as the “Already / Not Yet.”

[ + ] THE ALREADY: The Kingdom has already invaded. Satan’s head is crushed. The King is on the throne. We are already transferred from the domain of darkness into the Kingdom of the Son (Colossians 1:13).

[ + ] THE NOT YET: The Kingdom is not fully consummated. The King has not yet returned physically to judge the living and the dead, banish sin, and remake the cosmos.

You live in the overlap of the ages. You possess the spiritual authority of the coming age while battling the broken flesh of the present age. You are an embedded agent behind enemy lines, carrying the laws of a foreign Kingdom.

THE ROYAL PRIESTHOOD

Because you are in this Kingdom by grace, your identity has been radically, legally altered. You are no longer a slave to the world’s systems. You are an adopted heir to the Creator of the universe. In the Old Testament, the offices of King and Priest were strictly separated. In Christ, they are permanently fused.

1 PETER 2:9 (LSB)

“But you are a CHOSEN RACE, a royal PRIESTHOOD, a HOLY NATION, a PEOPLE FOR God’s OWN POSSESSION, so that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who has called you out of darkness into His marvelous light;”

As a priest, you have direct, unmediated access to the throne room of God. As royalty, you are being trained to rule and judge angels in the age to come (1 Corinthians 6:3). The Law could never give you this identity. Grace secured it instantly.

Do not lower the standard of the Law, but do not rely on it for your standing before God. You stand entirely on the blood of the King. You operate under the supreme jurisdiction of Grace, empowered to live a life of aggressive, joy-filled obedience.

/// GRACE IS NOT PERMISSION TO SIN. ///
/// IT IS THE POWER TO DESTROY IT. ///

WE ARE SAVED BY GRACE TO RULE IN TRUTH.

Your theological lens is sharp. You understand how the covenants build, how the Law operates, and how the Kingdom functions. Now, you must prepare to enter the physical and political battlefield where the King actually stepped foot. We must examine the world Jesus entered.
