THE PROSPERITY GOSPEL
& LEGALISM
A false gospel is not merely a misunderstanding; it is a damnable counterfeit. The enemy does not always attack with outright atheism; he attacks by offering a Jesus who does not save, and a cross that is not sufficient.
THE PROSPERITY GOSPEL:
THE COUNTERFEIT OF GREED.
The Prosperity Gospel (also known as the Health and Wealth Gospel, or Word of Faith movement) is one of the most toxic exports of the Western church. It fundamentally shifts the center of the universe from the Creator to the creature. It transforms God into a cosmic bellhop, the cross into a transaction for earthly riches, and faith into a metaphysical “force” used to bend reality to your will.
“If anyone advocates a different doctrine and does not agree with sound words, those of our Lord Jesus Christ… constant friction between men of depraved mind and deprived of the truth, who suppose that godliness is a means of gain.”
The Anthropological Error
Transactional Theology & Eisegesis.
The roots of the Prosperity Gospel lie not in historic Christianity, but in the 19th-century “New Thought” metaphysical cults. It relies on severe Eisegesis (reading one’s own ideas into the text) rather than Exegesis (drawing the author’s intended meaning out). It abuses texts like “by His stripes we are healed” (Isaiah 53:5) which contextually refers to the healing of our sin-nature and weaponizes it to guarantee physical health. When the believer inevitably suffers or remains poor, the false teacher cruelly blames them for “lacking faith.”
Peter warned the early church about this exact financial manipulation. In 2 Peter 2:3, he writes: “And in their greed they will exploit you with false words.” The Prosperity Gospel does not teach people to love God; it teaches people to love money, and use God as the ATM to get it.
LEGALISM: THE COUNTERFEIT OF PRIDE
While the Prosperity Gospel abuses human desire, Legalism abuses human duty. Legalism is frequently misunderstood simply as “having strict rules.” That is not the core issue. Legalism is a lethal soteriological error it is the belief that human performance can either attain, maintain, or perfect our justification before a holy God.
“But even if we, or an angel from heaven, should proclaim to you a gospel contrary to the gospel we have proclaimed to you, let him be accursed [anathema]!”
GRACE & OBEDIENCE PROPERLY BALANCED
How do we escape the ditches of greed and pride? We must construct a precise, orthodox synthesis of Grace and Obedience. Both Legalism and the Prosperity Gospel bypass the cross. The true Gospel runs directly through it.
Monergistic Justification: We are declared righteous by God entirely based on the perfect life and sacrificial death of Jesus Christ, received by faith alone. We contribute nothing to our justification but the sin that made it necessary. God does not owe us health, wealth, or a pain-free life; He owed us wrath, and gave us the blood of His Son instead.
Synergistic Sanctification: Because we have been radically saved by grace, the Holy Spirit regenerates our hearts, giving us a violent hatred for sin and a desperate love for holiness. We do not obey God to become accepted; we obey God with blood, sweat, and tears precisely because we are already accepted. True grace does not produce lazy Christians; it produces a militant, joyful obedience that Legalism could never achieve.
THE DANGER OF SUBTRACTION AND ADDITION.
The enemy will try to destroy your faith from two sides. He will whisper through the Prosperity Gospel to *subtract* the cross, promising you a crown without the suffering. Or, he will whisper through Legalism to *add* to the cross, convincing you that Christ’s blood was insufficient and you must earn your keep.
Reject both. Anchor your soul entirely in the finished work of Jesus Christ. If you have Christ, even in the midst of poverty, suffering, or failure you possess the greatest treasure in the cosmos.
