TITHING IN THE NEW TESTAMENT

Dismantling theocratic taxation and examining the transition from mandatory percentages to total sacrificial surrender.

THE TYRANNY OF THE TENTH

“Each one must do just as he has purposed in his heart, not grudgingly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.” (2 Corinthians 9:7, LSB)

The modern pulpit has frequently weaponized the Old Testament “tithe” to bind the consciences of the New Covenant saints, yet it ignores the covenantal, agrarian, and theocratic context of the mandate. When we audit the New Covenant records, the mandatory 10% disappears, replaced by a standard that is both more gracious and more demanding: total lordship over 100% of the believer’s assets.

The tension of Law vs. Grace finds its most practical expression in how the Church handles wealth. To understand this transition, we must submit to the lexical reality of the Greek text and the historical dismantling of the Levitical tax code.

SECTION 01 [ PENDING ]

THE ANATOMY OF THE MOSAIC TAX

Under the Mosaic Law, the “tithe” was a theocratic tax-system, not a voluntary donation. It was strictly agrarian livestock and produce from the land of Israel. Most critically, it was not 10%. When calculated across the three-fold requirements of the Law, the annual burden was approximately **23.3%**.

δεκάτη (DEKATĒ) “A Tenth Part.” Specifically associated with the Levitical inheritance.
ἱλαρός (HILAROS) “Cheerful.” The required disposition of the New Covenant heart.

// THE 23.3% MOSAIC TAX CODE //

TAX 01 // THE LEVITICAL TITHE

10% Annually (Numbers 18:21)

Required to support the tribe of Levi, who had no land inheritance, for their service in the Tabernacle and Temple.

TAX 02 // THE FESTIVAL TITHE

10% Annually (Deuteronomy 12:17-18)

A second tenth used by the family to fund their travel and consumption during the national religious festivals in Jerusalem.

TAX 03 // THE POOR TITHE

10% Triennially (Deuteronomy 14:28-29)

Collected every third year (averaging 3.3% annually) to provide for the widow, the orphan, and the sojourner within Israel’s gates.

THE PRIESTHOOD CHANGE

The writer of Hebrews provides the final exegetical blow to the mandatory tithe. In Hebrews 7:12, he declares: “For when the priesthood is changed, of necessity there takes place a change of law also.” Since our High Priest is after the order of Melchizedek and not Levi, the law concerning the support of the Levites (the tithe) is obsolete.

OLD COVENANT MANDATE

“You shall surely tithe all the produce from what you sow, which comes out of the field every year.” (Deuteronomy 14:22)

NEW COVENANT PRINCIPLE

“On the first day of every week each one of you is to put aside and save, as he may prosper.” (1 Corinthians 16:2)

LEXICAL MECHANICS // THE LAW OF LIBERTY

ἀνάγκη Anankē “Compulsion.” 2 Corinthians 9:7 explicitly forbids giving under this state. A mandatory percentage is, by definition, “Anankē.”
προαίρεσις Proairesis “Purpose of Heart.” Stewardship is now a pre-meditated act of the individual’s will, guided by the Holy Spirit, not a percentage code.

DISARMING PROOF TEXTS

MALACHI 3:8-10

“Will a man rob God?”

THE ASSUMPTION:

Non-tithers are under a divine curse and are actively robbing the Almighty.

THE EVIDENCE:

The robbery was by the priests who stole from the storehouse. Furthermore, Christ has redeemed us from the “curse of the law” (Galatians 3:13). To apply the Malachi curse to the Church is a denial of Christ’s sufficiency.

MATTHEW 23:23

“You ought to have done these”

THE ASSUMPTION:

Jesus commanded the tithe, thus cementing it for all generations.

THE EVIDENCE:

Jesus was addressing Pharisees while the Old Covenant and Temple were still active. He was upholding the Law of the Land before His death inaugurated the New Covenant and rendered these ordinances obsolete (Hebrews 8:13).

“The New Covenant does not lower the standard of giving; it elevates it. Under the Law, the heart was satisfied with ten percent. Under Grace, the heart is unsatisfied until it has offered everything.” Pastor John MacArthur // The Grace of Giving
THE EPILOGUE [ PENDING ]

THE SACRIFICE OF THE HEART

If we use “Grace” to justify giving less than the Old Testament saints under “Law,” we have misunderstood the Gospel. The stewardship of the believer is an overflow of the New Birth. We no longer give out of fear of a curse, but out of the joy of our adoption.
