CHRISTIANITY VS JEHOVAH’S WITNESSES
A scholastic examination of the Watchtower Society, the New World Translation, and the resurrection of the Arian theology.THE ARIAN RESURGENCE
“For false christs and false prophets will arise and will show great signs and wonders, so as to mislead, if possible, even the elect.” (Matthew 24:24, LSB)
The organization known as Jehovah’s Witnesses, established in the late 19th century by Charles Taze Russell, claims to be the singular restoration of authentic, first-century Christianity. To sustain this claim, the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society requires its adherents to completely reject the historic, orthodox understanding of the Godhead.
There are rarely new theological errors; rather, ancient errors are repackaged for modern consumption. The Christology of the Watchtower is identical to the 4th-century teaching of Arianism, which was definitively answered at the Council of Nicaea in 325 AD. Arianism posits that Jesus Christ is a created being, subordinate to the Father in essence and origin, effectively classifying the Savior of the world as a prominent angelic creature.
To defend this theology, the Watchtower Society did not rely on standard manuscript transmission; they produced their own modified text the New World Translation (NWT). To interact with this system, we must subject this text to the objective laws of ancient Greek grammar.
THE ALTERATION OF THE TEXT
The New World Translation (NWT) presents a systematic, documented alteration of the Greek text designed specifically to obscure the deity of Christ. It is a translation rejected by recognized Greek scholarship. It was produced by a deeply secretive translation committee, whose most prominent member, Frederick Franz, admitted under oath in a Scottish court (1954) to lacking formal university degrees in biblical languages. They did not simply translate the text; they engineered it to fit their doctrine.
LEXICAL MECHANICS // WATCHTOWER ALTERATIONS
A glaring grammatical manipulation is found in Colossians 1:16-17. The Greek text declares of Christ: “For by Him all things were created.” Because this contradicts the Arian concept that Christ is a created being, the NWT inserted the word “other” into the text four times in brackets: “By means of him all [other] things were created.” The word “other” does not exist in a single Greek manuscript. It was inserted solely to protect the theological premise of the Watchtower.
THE ARCHANGEL VS THE CREATOR
A counterfeit Christ cannot save a real sinner. The foundational necessity of salvation rests on the object of one’s faith. The ultimate divide between the Watchtower and the Bible comes down to one question: Has Jesus always existed?
THE WATCHTOWER CHRIST
[ THE CREATED MICHAEL ]According to official Jehovah’s Witness theology, Jesus did not exist eternally. He was the very first creation of Jehovah God, existing in heaven as Michael the Archangel before his human incarnation.
THE ANGELIC INCARNATION
The Watchtower posits that Michael’s life force was transferred into the womb of Mary. He ceased to be an angel, lived as a perfect human, and then ceased to be human upon his death.
THE DENIAL OF THE BODILY RESURRECTION
Jehovah’s Witnesses firmly deny the bodily resurrection of Christ. They teach that Jesus’ physical body was disposed of by God, and He was resurrected merely as a “spirit creature” who assumed physical forms temporarily to convince the disciples.
THE BIBLICAL CHRIST
[ THE ETERNAL LOGOS ]The biblical text refuses to allow Christ to be categorized among the angels. The Book of Hebrews was written explicitly to elevate Christ far above the angelic host.
THE UNCREATED CREATOR
Hebrews 1:5 explicitly asks, “For to which of the angels did He ever say, ‘You are My Son’?” Furthermore, Hebrews 1:8 commands all the angels of God to worship Him. If Christ is Michael the Archangel, God the Father is actively commanding the angelic host to commit idolatry.
THE HISTORICAL RESURRECTION
In Luke 24:39, the resurrected Christ explicitly refutes the “spirit creature” doctrine: “See My hands and My feet, that it is I Myself; touch Me and see, for a spirit does not have flesh and bones as you see that I have.”
DISARMING WATCHTOWER PROOF TEXTS
When engaged in debate, the Jehovah’s Witness will immediately default to a carefully selected series of texts that appear to depict Christ as a subordinate, created being. We must subject these texts to precise, contextual analysis.
“The Father is greater than I”
THE ASSUMPTION:Since Jesus admits the Father is greater than He is, Jesus cannot be co-equal God.
THE EVIDENCE:The error here confuses *nature* with *role*. During the incarnation, Christ voluntarily subjected Himself to the authority of the Father (Philippians 2:5-8). The Father is ‘greater’ in His role during the incarnation, but not ‘better’ in His divine nature. A human king is ‘greater’ than a citizen in authority, but both are equally human. Jesus and the Father are equally God.
“The beginning of the creation”
THE ASSUMPTION:Jesus is the very first thing that God created at the beginning of time.
THE EVIDENCE:The Greek word translated “beginning” is *archē*. While it can occasionally mean “first in time,” it dominantly means “first in rank, ruler, or originator” (from which we get the word *architect*). Jesus is not the first *product* of creation; He is the sovereign *architect* and ruler over all creation.
The Denial of the Spirit
THE ASSUMPTION:The Holy Spirit is not a person, but rather Jehovah’s impersonal active force, comparable to electricity.
THE EVIDENCE:Electricity does not speak (Acts 13:2). Electricity cannot be grieved or lied to (Ephesians 4:30, Acts 5:3). The biblical text ascribes intellect, emotion, and will to the Holy Spirit, designating Him explicitly as the Third Person of the Triune Godhead.
THE NECESSITY OF THE ETERNAL SON
The theological debate with the Watchtower is not merely an argument over Greek syntax; it is an evaluation of the foundation of human redemption. A created angel cannot bear the infinite weight of divine wrath on a Roman cross. Only an infinite God can absorb an infinite punishment.
To alter the identity of Christ is to nullify the gospel. Jesus of Nazareth is not Michael the Archangel. He is the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the uncreated Creator who entered human history, accomplished the bodily resurrection, and demands the unwavering worship of every created thing.
CONNECTED DOCTRINAL RECORDS
“The defense of biblical orthodoxy requires systematic cross-examination of the Godhead and the Resurrection.”
