THEOLOGICAL INVESTIGATION // THE NORMATIVE PRINCIPLE

CHURCH TRADITION VS SCRIPTURE

The Sovereign Text vs. The Magisterial Pretensions: Dismantling the Syncretism of Human Custom.
PROLOGUE [ PENDING ]

THE ECLIPSE OF THE WORD

“‘But in vain do they worship Me, Teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’” (Mark 7:7, LSB)

The supreme conflict of ecclesiology is not found in liturgical style or denominational branding, but in the location of absolute authority. The Roman and Eastern systems posit a “dual-source” authority, where Church Tradition stands alongside the Text as an equal arbiter of truth. This is not merely an error; it is a theological coup.

As Christ explicitly rebuked the Pharisees for “invalidating the word of God” by their tradition (Matthew 15:6, LSB), so we must rebuff any system that seeks to bind the conscience where Scripture has remained silent. Scripture is the only Norma normans non normata the norm that norms, but is not normed.

SECTION 01 [ PENDING ]

THE GENESIS OF MAGISTERIAL OVERREACH

Church history is the chronicle of the Word being slowly buried under the weight of ecclesiastical accretion. What began as a preservation of apostolic testimony evolved into a self-authenticating hierarchy that claims the right to “create” dogma.

// THE CHRONICLE OF AUTHORITY EROSION //

PHASE 01 // APOSTOLIC DEPOSIT

THE GRAPHE: THE FINAL ANCHOR

The Apostles establish the written Word as the final court of appeal. Even the Bereans were commended for testing the Apostolic preaching against the Scriptural text (Acts 17:11, LSB). The “faith” was once for all delivered to the saints (Jude 1:3, LSB).

PHASE 02 // PATRISTIC RECOGNITION

REGULA FIDEI: THE SERVANT RULE

Early tradition served as a “Rule of Faith”a summary of the Word. It was never intended to be a second source of truth, but a concise defense of the only source. The Word was recognized as the “sword of the Spirit” (Ephesians 6:17, LSB).

PHASE 03 // MEDIEVAL MAGISTERIUM

TRADITIO: THE RIVAL SOVEREIGN

The rise of the Papacy and the claim of “unwritten traditions” having equal weight. The Church ceased to be the servant of the Word and became its master, leading to the necessary explosion of the Reformation. The Word was forsaken for “doctrines of demons” (1 Timothy 4:1, LSB).

SECTION 02 [ PENDING ]

THE LEXICAL MATRIX

LEXICAL FORENSICS // THE ONTOLOGY OF THE TEXT
γραφή Graphē (Greek) “Writing / Scripture.” NT usage refers exclusively to the divinely inspired deposit. It is “living and active” (Hebrews 4:12, LSB).
παράδοσις Paradosis (Greek) “Tradition / Handing Down.” We are warned against “philosophy and empty deception, according to the tradition of men” (Colossians 2:8, LSB).
θεόπνευστος Theopneustos (Greek) “God-Breathed.” The unique ontological status of all Scripture (2 Timothy 3:16, LSB). Tradition is never breathed out by God; only the Graphe is.
φέρω Pherō (Greek) “Moved / Carried.” Men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit (2 Peter 1:21, LSB). No council shares this guarantee.
SECTION 03 [ PENDING ]

DISARMING TRADITIONALIST PROOF TEXTS

2 THESS 2:15

“HOLD TO TRADITIONS”

THE ASSUMPTION:

Paul authorizes a separate, oral stream of tradition equal to Scripture.

THE EVIDENCE:

Paul refers to the apostolic core he delivered. He is not validating an evolving Magisterium, but calling them back to the fixed deposit. If it does not speak according to this word, it has no light (Isaiah 8:20, LSB).

1 TIM 3:15

“PILLAR OF TRUTH”

THE ASSUMPTION:

The Church is the source of truth, and Scripture is dependent on her.

THE EVIDENCE:

A pillar does not create the roof; it supports it. The Church defends the Truth, but she is never its origin. She is birthed by the “word of truth” (James 1:18, LSB).

MATT 16:18

“UPON THIS ROCK”

THE ASSUMPTION:

A human office is the final authority that determines the meaning of Scripture.

THE EVIDENCE:

The “Rock” is Peter’s confession of Christ’s identity. The Church is built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ being the cornerstone (Ephesians 2:20, LSB).
