SET 2 // FIRE 4

WHY OBEDIENCE MATTERS

You are learning to turn away from sin.
Now you need to understand what you are turning toward.

Obedience.

Obedience is not how you earn salvation.

It is how you live because you are saved.

Ephesians 2:8–10 (ESV)

“For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.”

You are not obeying to be accepted. You are obeying because you are already accepted.

This matters because many people get this wrong.

[ X ] Some think obedience earns God’s approval.

[ X ] Others ignore obedience because they think grace removes it.

BOTH ARE WRONG.

THE MOTIVE

Jesus makes this clear.

John 14:15 (ESV)

“If you love me, you will keep my commandments.”

Obedience is connected to love.

NOT PRESSURE
NOT PERFORMANCE
LOVE

When you begin to understand what Jesus has done, your response changes.

You do not ask, “What can I get away with?”

You begin to ask, “How do I live in a way that reflects this?”

THE EVIDENCE

Obedience is also evidence.

1 John 2:3–5 (ESV)

“And by this we know that we have come to know him, if we keep his commandments. Whoever says ‘I know him’ but does not keep his commandments is a liar, and the truth is not in him, but whoever keeps his word, in him truly the love of God is perfected.”

This is not about perfection.

It is about direction.

Your life begins to move toward obedience.

Obedience also leads to growth.

James 1:22 (ESV)

“But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.”

If you only hear truth but do not live it, you will not grow.

Obedience is how truth becomes real in your life.

THE COST

Obedience is not always easy.

Sometimes it goes against what you feel.
Sometimes it goes against what you want.

Luke 9:23 (ESV)

“If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.”

This means you do not follow yourself.

You follow Him.

Obedience is not about losing your life.
It is about living it the right way.

John 10:10 (ESV)

“I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.”

Real life is found in following Him. Not in going your own way.

THE BOTTOM LINE

This is why obedience matters.

// It reflects love.
// It shows what is real.
// It leads to growth.
// It aligns your life with truth.

You are not obeying to become something.

You are obeying because something has already changed.

Stay clear on this.

Do not turn obedience into pressure. Do not remove it from your life. Walk in it.

Now that you understand why obedience matters, the next step is understanding how grace and obedience work together so you do not misunderstand either.
