HOW TO RESIST

You now understand what temptation is. The next step is learning how to resist it in a real and consistent way.

NOT BY WILLPOWER.
BY RESPONDING CORRECTLY.

Temptation is not defeated by trying harder in the moment. If you rely on willpower alone, you will wear out. Scripture does not point you to yourself. It points you to truth and to what God has provided.

JAMES 4:7 (ESV)

“Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”

Resistance begins with submission.

You do not start by fighting temptation directly. You start by aligning yourself with God. When your direction is set toward Him, resistance becomes possible.

GROUNDED IN TRUTH

Jesus shows this clearly when He was tempted.

MATTHEW 4:4 (ESV)

“But he answered, ‘It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”

He did not respond with emotion or argument. He responded with Scripture. Truth was His defense. This shows that resistance is grounded in the Word. If you do not know truth, you will not have clarity when temptation comes.

CREATE SEPARATION

Resistance requires distance. You do not stay close to what is pulling you.

2 TIMOTHY 2:22 (ESV)

“So flee youthful passions and pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace, along with those who call on the Lord from a pure heart.”

Fleeing means you remove yourself.
You do not manage temptation. You separate from it.

At the same time, you do not only run from something. You move toward something. You pursue what is right. If you only focus on avoiding sin, your mind remains focused on it. When you pursue what is right, your direction changes.

THE BATTLEFIELD OF THOUGHT

Resistance directly involves your thinking.

2 CORINTHIANS 10:5 (ESV)

“We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ.”

Temptation often begins in your thoughts. If you allow those thoughts to stay, they grow. Taking them captive means you do not accept them as truth. You bring them back under what God has said. You are active in this.

[ X ] You recognize the thought.

[ X ] You reject what is not true.

[ X ] You replace it with truth.

THE WAY OUT

1 CORINTHIANS 10:13 (ESV)

“God is faithful… with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.”

The way out may not feel obvious at first. It may require you to step away, change direction, or choose something that feels harder in the moment. But it is there. You must take it.

Resistance requires speed.

Do not delay.

The longer you stay in temptation, the stronger it becomes. When you recognize it, you respond immediately. Do not wait. Do not entertain it. Do not stay in it. Respond.

YOU ARE NOT LEARNING PERFECTION.
YOU ARE LEARNING DIRECTION.

There will be times where you do not respond correctly. That does not mean you stop. You return, you correct it, and you keep moving forward. Over time, resistance becomes stronger. What once felt overwhelming becomes something you recognize and respond to more quickly.

/// Stay grounded in truth. ///
/// Stay aware. ///
/// Respond quickly. ///

YOU ARE NOT POWERLESS.

YOU HAVE BEEN GIVEN WHAT YOU NEED.

Now that you understand how to resist temptation, the next step is learning how to avoid falling into the same patterns again.
