SPIRITUAL DISCERNMENT
You have learned how to recognize false teaching and why truth matters. Now you must go deeper.
You must learn the mechanics of spiritual discernment.
NOT JUST FACTS.
SEEING CLEARLY.
Discernment is not just knowing theological facts. It is the ability to see clearly. It is understanding what is from God and what is not, even when it is completely hidden from the untrained eye.
This is necessary because not everything that appears spiritual is from God.
“Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world.”
Scripture teaches that you are not to believe everything you hear. You are commanded to test it.
This means discernment is not optional. It is something you are expected to develop. It goes beyond surface-level thinking. It is not only about what is being said. It is about what is behind it. The source, the direction, and the outcome.
THE DISGUISE
Something can sound right on the surface but still be completely off in its foundation. This is why you cannot rely on appearance.
“And no wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light.”
Deception does not look dark.
It looks good.
Because of this, discernment requires more than emotion or first impressions. A charismatic speaker and an emotional atmosphere are not proof of the Holy Spirit. You must learn to see past the performance.
DEVELOPED THROUGH THE WORD
Discernment is developed strictly through the Word. The more you know truth, the easier it is to recognize what is not true. You are not guessing. You are comparing everything to what God has already said.
“But solid food is for the mature, for those who have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil.”
This shows that discernment is a muscle. It grows over time through consistent exposure to truth. It is also deeply connected to the Spirit. The Holy Spirit leads in truth. He does not lead in confusion. As you walk in the Spirit, you become acutely aware of what aligns with God and what does not.
This does not mean you rely on a feeling. It means you stay grounded in the Word and attentive to what God is actually doing.
THE FILTERING PROCESS
Discernment requires attention. You are not passive. You listen carefully. You examine what is being said. You compare it to Scripture. When you encounter a teaching, a movement, or a voice, you ask:
[ ? ] DOES THIS ALIGN WITH THE WORD?
[ ? ] IS ANYTHING BEING ADDED OR REMOVED?
[ ? ] DOES THIS POINT TO CHRIST CORRECTLY?
[ ? ] DOES THIS LEAD TOWARD TRUTH OR AWAY FROM IT?
If something does not align, it is not from God. This is not about becoming a critic of everything. It is about becoming clear.
DISCERNMENT PROTECTS YOU.
It keeps you from being misled. It keeps your foundation stable. It keeps your growth aligned with truth. Without discernment, you will be shaped by whatever you hear.
THIS IS WHERE YOUR WALK BECOMES SHARPER.
Now that you understand what spiritual discernment is, the next step is learning how to accurately test everything you hear.
