PRESERVATION & MANUSCRIPTS

The skeptic claims the Bible has been corrupted by time.
History proves the skeptic is a liar.

THE TELEPHONE GAME MYTH.
AND WHY IT FAILS.

Every secular university uses the exact same illustration to attack the Bible: The Telephone Game. They tell you that a message whispered from one person to another over hundreds of years will inevitably mutate into nonsense. They claim the text we hold today is a corrupted shadow of the original.

This analogy is completely false because the Bible was never transmitted in a single, linear line of whispers.

The Bible was transmitted publicly, identically, and simultaneously across multiple continents, in thousands of written manuscripts, under the most severe scribal oversight in human history. To understand this, we must first look at the terrifying reverence the Jewish scribes held for the Old Testament text.

PSALM 119:89 (LSB)

“Forever, O Yahweh, Your word is settled in heaven.”

THE SCRIBAL CRUCIBLE

The Old Testament was primarily preserved by a group of scribes known as the Masoretes. The Masoretic Text (MT) is the authoritative Hebrew text of the Jewish Bible. These men did not simply “copy” books; they operated under a mathematical protocol so rigorous it borders on obsessive.

PROTOCOL 1 They counted every single letter in a scroll. They knew exactly which letter was the dead-center of a book. If the copy did not mathematically align perfectly with the original, it was destroyed.
PROTOCOL 2 A scribe could not write a single word from memory. He had to look at the master scroll, read the word aloud, and then write it.
PROTOCOL 3 If a scribe made a single error in writing the name of God (Yahweh), he could not erase it. The entire section of animal skin was cut out and buried, lest the name of God be visually marred.
MATTHEW 5:18 (LSB)

“For truly I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or stroke shall pass from the Law until all is accomplished.”

Jesus was referring to the yod (the smallest Hebrew letter) and the tittle (a tiny decorative stroke on a letter). Jesus had absolute confidence in the microscopic, stroke-by-stroke preservation of the Old Testament. But for centuries, skeptics mocked this… until 1947.

THE DEAD SEA SCROLLS

Before 1947, our oldest complete copy of the Hebrew Old Testament was from around 900 AD. Skeptics argued that we had no idea what the original texts looked like before Christ. Then, a Bedouin shepherd threw a rock into a cave in Qumran, near the Dead Sea, and shattered a clay jar.

Inside those caves was the greatest archaeological discovery of the 20th century: The Dead Sea Scrolls.

These scrolls dated back to between 250 BC and 68 AD a massive thousand-year leap backward in time. Scholars held their breath. They unrolled the Great Isaiah Scroll (dating to 125 BC) and compared it to the Masoretic Text from 900 AD. What did a thousand years of hand-copying do to the text?

THE TEXT WAS IDENTICAL IN MEANING.

Over 1,000 years of transmission, there was zero theological corruption. The only differences were minor spelling variations (like “honor” vs “honour”). The Book of Isaiah that Jesus read in the synagogue is the exact same Book of Isaiah you are reading in your LSB today. God locked it in a cave to silence the critics.

THE SEPTUAGINT (LXX)

God did not just preserve the text in Hebrew; He prepared the world for its distribution. Around 250 BC, 70 Jewish scholars in Alexandria translated the Hebrew Old Testament into Greek. This translation is called the Septuagint (LXX).

Why does this matter? Because Greek was the universal language of the Roman Empire. When the Apostles went out to preach the Gospel, they didn’t have to teach Gentiles Hebrew. The Old Testament was already translated and waiting for them. The Septuagint is the version predominantly quoted by the New Testament authors. It proves God’s sovereign hand over the transmission of language itself.

ISAIAH 40:8 (LSB)

“The grass withers, the flower fades, But the word of our God stands forever.”

THE GREEK AVALANCHE

Skeptics demand to see the “original autographs” (the exact papyrus Paul signed). We do not have them. They decayed centuries ago. If we had the original scroll of Romans, men would build a shrine around it and worship the paper instead of the God who breathed it.

But God’s method of preservation is far superior to keeping one original document locked in a vault. His method is preservation through multiplicity.

Consider secular history. Julius Caesar’s *Gallic Wars* has about 10 surviving manuscripts. The works of Aristotle have around 49. The writings of Homer (The Iliad), the most copied secular book of antiquity, has about 1,900. No scholar doubts these texts.

[ + ] By comparison, we possess over 5,800 ancient Greek manuscripts of the New Testament.

[ + ] Add in the early Latin, Coptic, and Syriac translations, and the number exceeds 24,000 manuscript copies.

[ + ] Even if all 24,000 manuscripts burned tomorrow, we could reconstruct the entire New Testament perfectly just from the thousands of quotes found in the letters of the early church fathers.

CONFRONTING VARIANTS

Atheists like Bart Ehrman love to point out that there are “hundreds of thousands of errors” in our Greek manuscripts. This is highly manipulative phrasing. These are not “errors” that change truth; they are textual variants.

Because we have 5,800 manuscripts hand-copied by thousands of different people, of course there are variations. If one scribe misspelled a word in one document, and that document was copied 5,000 times, the skeptic counts that as “5,000 errors.”

Over 99% of all variants are spelling differences, skipped lines, or word order changes (e.g., “Christ Jesus” vs “Jesus Christ”).

Not a single fundamental Christian doctrine not the Trinity, not the Resurrection, not salvation by grace rests on a disputed variant. Because we have so many manuscripts, textual scholars can lay them all side-by-side, spot the spelling mistakes, and perfectly reverse-engineer the original text. The abundance of copies guarantees the purity of the message.

1 PETER 1:24–25 (LSB)

“For, ‘ALL FLESH IS LIKE GRASS, AND ALL ITS GLORY LIKE THE FLOWER OF GRASS. THE GRASS WITHERS, AND THE FLOWER FALLS OFF, BUT THE WORD OF THE LORD ENDURES FOREVER.’ And this is the word which was proclaimed to you as good news.”

God did not hand us a mystical, glowing golden book from the sky. He entered into human history. He used human language, human ink, and human scribes, and He sovereignly commanded the ages to protect it. You do not need an identical, magically flawless copy to have an entirely preserved truth.

/// GOD PRESERVED HIS WORD THROUGH MULTIPLICITY, NOT SECRECY. ///
/// THE ABUNDANCE OF EVIDENCE DESTROYS THE SKEPTIC. ///

THE TRANSMISSION IS SECURE.

You now know that the text was perfectly preserved from antiquity to today. But how do we take ancient Hebrew and Greek and put it into modern English without corrupting it? The next step is understanding translation philosophy.
