SET 9 // SYSTEMATIC THEOLOGY // CAPSTONE

SOTERIOLOGY, ECCLESIOLOGY
& ESCHATOLOGY

We do not study theology merely to outline concepts, but to map the sovereign rescue mission of God.
From the decree of salvation, to the embassy of the Church, to the final restoration of the cosmos.

THE DOCTRINE OF SALVATION.
SOTERIOLOGY.

Salvation is not an arbitrary reaction by God to human failure; it is a meticulously engineered, eternally purposed covenant of redemption. Soteriology answers the most terrifying question in the universe: How can a holy God acquit a guilty sinner without violating His own justice?

ROMANS 8:30 (LSB)

“…and these whom He predestined, He also called; and these whom He called, He also justified; and these whom He justified, He also glorified.”

The Ordo Salutis (Order of Salvation)

The Logical Chain of Grace.

Theology distinguishes between the phases of salvation. Regeneration is the instantaneous, monergistic new birth given by the Spirit. Justification is the forensic, legal declaration that we are perfectly righteous based solely on the imputed righteousness of Christ. Adoption brings us legally into the family of God. Finally, Sanctification is the progressive, synergistic process where we are continually conformed to the image of Christ.

PILLARS OF RESCUE

IMPUTATION: THE GREAT EXCHANGE Justification rests on a double imputation. Our wretched sin was legally credited to Christ on the cross (where He suffered the wrath for it), and His perfect, flawless obedience is legally credited to our account. We stand before God wearing the righteousness of the Son.
SANCTIFICATION: THE WAR OF HOLINESS While justification is an event, sanctification is a war. It is the lifelong process of putting the flesh to death and being renewed in the mind. A salvation that does not produce a visible change in nature is a fiction.

ECCLESIOLOGY: THE BLOOD-BOUGHT BRIDE

The Church is not a human institution, a non-profit organization, or a social club. The Church (Ekklesia the called-out ones) is the very bride of Christ, purchased entirely by His blood. It exists both universally (all believers across all time) and locally (the gathered, visible body of believers).

EPHESIANS 4:11-12 (LSB)

“And He gave some as apostles, and some as prophets, and some as evangelists, and some as pastors and teachers, for the equipping of the saints for the work of service, to the building up of the body of Christ.”

The purpose of the local church is three-fold: the exaltation of God (worship), the edification of the saints (discipleship), and the evangelization of the lost. God does not operate parallel to the Church; the Church is His primary theater of operations in the world.

THE ORDINANCES Christ instituted two ordinances for His Bride. Baptism is the outward, public sign of an inward reality our identification with the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus. The Lord’s Supper is a memorial feast of covenant renewal, reminding us of the broken body and spilled blood until He returns.
SPIRITUAL GIFTS Gifts are given sovereignly by the Spirit, not for personal platforming or mystical glory, but specifically for the edification and building up of the local body. A healthy church operates organically as a unified body with many distinct, necessary members.

ESCHATOLOGY: THE FINAL RESTORATION

Eschatology (the doctrine of last things) has suffered greatly from modern sensationalism. We must reject the temptation to treat biblical prophecy as a puzzle to be solved with daily news headlines. Eschatology is deeply pastoral; it is meant to provide unshakeable hope in the ultimate triumph of Jesus Christ.

Inaugurated Eschatology

The “Already” and the “Not Yet.”

The Kingdom of God is already here, inaugurated by the first coming, death, and resurrection of Christ. We presently live in the overlapping of the ages. However, the consummation of the Kingdom is not yet here. We await the literal, physical, bodily return of Jesus Christ to permanently eradicate sin and execute final judgment.

REVELATION 21:3 (LSB)

“And I heard a loud voice from the throne, saying, ‘Behold, the tabernacle of God is among men, and He will dwell among them, and they shall be His people, and God Himself will be among them.’”

History is not cyclical; it is linear, and it is heading toward a terrifying and glorious apex. The Final Judgment will vindicate the righteousness of God publicly. For the wicked, it means eternal conscious punishment. But for the justified, it leads to the ultimate promise: The bodily resurrection. We will not float as disembodied spirits; we will inhabit glorified, physical bodies in a renewed, physical heaven and earth where the curse is permanently broken.

THE EMBASSY OF THE KING.

To understand these doctrines is to understand your place in the narrative of existence. You were saved from God’s wrath, by God’s grace, for God’s glory. You have been placed into the Church, which acts as the embassy of the coming Kingdom in hostile territory.

Do not give into despair or sensationalism. The King is returning, the dead will rise, and every square inch of the cosmos will be reclaimed for His glory.
