SET 9 // FIRE 2 // SYSTEMATIC THEOLOGY

THEOLOGY PROPER,
CHRISTOLOGY & PNEUMATOLOGY

Systematic theology is not an exercise in academic vanity; it is the holy endeavor of thinking God’s thoughts after Him.
Error in our understanding of God inevitably leads to error in our worship.

THE DOCTRINE OF GOD.
THEOLOGY PROPER.

We do not invent theology; we mine it from the infallible Word of God. Theology Proper deals specifically with the overarching nature of the Godhead. To know God is the supreme pursuit of the human soul. God is not a cosmic force or a magnified human; He is the infinite, eternal, uncreated Creator. He is entirely self-existent (Aseity) and unchanging (Immutability).

MATTHEW 28:19 (LSB)

“Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.”

The Ontological vs. Economic Trinity

One in Essence, Three in Person.

The Trinity is the necessary deduction of biblical revelation. Note the singular “name” (not names) in Matthew 28:19, followed by the three distinct persons. Historically, theologians distinguish between the Ontological Trinity (how God exists in Himself co-equal, co-eternal, consubstantial) and the Economic Trinity (how God operates in redemption the Father elects, the Son redeems, the Spirit applies). To abandon the Trinity is to abandon the Christian God entirely.

DIVINE ATTRIBUTES

HOLINESS: THE DEFINING METRIC God is completely separate from sin and entirely distinct from His creation. His holiness forms the terrifying backdrop against which all human sin is measured, making a perfect, bloody atonement an absolute necessity.
OMNISCIENCE: PERFECT FOREKNOWLEDGE God knows all things past, present, future, and all contingencies perfectly and effortlessly. He does not learn. He does not guess. This absolute knowledge provides impenetrable security for the believer.
OMNIPOTENCE: SOVEREIGN POWER God is able to do all His holy will. However, His power is always exercised in flawless harmony with His character. God cannot lie or deny Himself, because doing so would violate His immutable nature.

CHRISTOLOGY: THE INCARNATE WORD

Christology is the beating heart of biblical theology. If our Christology is defective, our salvation is invalid. The modern world seeks to reduce Jesus to a moral teacher or an enlightened mystic. Scripture and historical orthodoxy declare Him to be the eternal God manifest in human flesh.

JOHN 1:1, 14 (LSB)

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God… And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth.”

In Colossians 1:15-17 and Hebrews 1:3, the Apostles further fortify this truth, presenting Christ as the Creator and Sustainer of the universe, the “exact representation of His nature.” He is not a created being; He is the Creator stepping onto the stage of His own creation.

The Council of Chalcedon (AD 451)

The Hypostatic Union: Vere Deus, Vere Homo.

How do we reconcile the Deity and Humanity of Christ? The Hypostatic Union declares that in the incarnation, the eternal Son of God took on a human nature. Jesus Christ is 100% God and 100% Man. These two natures are united in one glorious Person “without confusion, without change, without division, without separation.” If He is not fully God, His sacrifice cannot appease infinite wrath. If He is not fully Man, He cannot legally represent humanity as our substitute.

PNEUMATOLOGY: THE SOVEREIGN SPIRIT

Perhaps no member of the Trinity is more abused today than the Holy Spirit. Charismatic sensationalism has reduced Him to an ecstatic bodily experience, while intellectual rationalism has reduced Him to a mere “impersonal force.” The Bible presents the Holy Spirit as a co-equal, co-eternal divine Person.

ACTS 5:3-4 (LSB)

“But Peter said, ‘Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit… You have not lied to men but to God.’”

Notice the undeniable legal logic of Peter: To lie to the Holy Spirit is to lie directly to God. The Holy Spirit possesses intellect, will, and emotion. He can be grieved, resisted, and obeyed.

THE SPIRIT IN SALVATION Salvation is deeply Trinitarian. The Father elects, the Son redeems, and the Holy Spirit applies. The Spirit is the divine agent of regeneration. He operates surgically, removing the heart of stone and granting the gift of saving faith. Without the resurrecting work of the Spirit, the sinner remains legally and spiritually dead.
THE SPIRIT IN SANCTIFICATION The Spirit’s role does not terminate at the moment of the new birth. He perpetually indwells the believer, illuminating the text of Scripture, putting the deeds of the flesh to death, and conforming the believer into the image of Christ. Sanctification is His ongoing, aggressive work in the justified sinner.

Theological Depth Note

Monergistic Regeneration.

A critical component of robust Pneumatology is understanding that regeneration (the new birth) is monergistic meaning it is a work of God alone. A dead man cannot cooperate in his own resurrection. The Holy Spirit breathes life into a hostile, spiritually dead sinner, making them willing to believe the Gospel. Grace is sovereign, and the Spirit’s wind blows wherever it wishes (John 3:8).

THE END OF THEOLOGY IS DOXOLOGY.

Sound theology was never meant to puff up the mind with pride; it is meant to drop you to your knees in absolute awe. When we rightly comprehend the terrifying holiness of the Father, the bleeding incarnation of the Son, and the sovereign, resurrecting power of the Holy Spirit, there is only one reasonable response.

Absolute surrender and pure, unadulterated worship. You are not just studying academic concepts; you are beholding the architecture of your salvation.
